Don Gambero Operational headquarters is in Mazara del Vallo (Trapani), an agricultural and fishing centre with an important port that gives shelter to the largest fishing fleet in Italy.
Mazara del Vallo (spelt Mazzara until the Second World War) was founded in the 9th century BC by the Phoenicians, who used it as a strategic emporium for their trans-Mediterranean trading interests.
Mazara del Vallo offers a fascinating mix of cultures. We visited the world famous Dancing Satyr netted from the sea, a labyrinthine North African Kasbah in the town centre, and admired the delightful architecture.
Its old town centre has much to see: incredible churches, the beautiful Piazza delle Repubblica with its cathedral and the Spanish baroque seminary.
Mazara del Vallo is a beautiful example of the interlacing of civilizations that took place in Sicily between the European populations and those of Islamic and the North African region.
